The Union Army of the Tennessee, under command of Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, was gathering in force near Pittsburg Landing in southwest Tennessee.  Their target: nearby Corinth, Mississippi, an important railway hub for the South.  While Grant awaited Don Carlos Buell's Army of the Ohio, Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston launched a surprise attack on the morning of April 6, 1862, propelling the camps of sleeping, breakfasting Union soldiers into disarray.  The Battle of Shiloh was engaged.

The Union army was pushed back but were able to establish lines of battle at the "Hornet’s Nest" which the Confederates eventually overcame.  With the death of Johnston, the highest ranking officer to be killed in the war, Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard assumed command and pressed the Union line back to Pittsburg Landing where they held until after dark when the fighting ceased.

By the next morning, April 7, Buell had arrived with fresh troops and at 6:00 am the hostilities resumed.  The battle-worn Confederates were forced back but held their line.  Realizing they were now greatly outnumbered by fresh troops and hampered by high casualties, Beauregard retired from the field and returned to Corinth.

With 3,482 killed, Shiloh proved to be the bloodiest battle in American history up to that time.
