On August 5, 1862, Union forces, under the command of Brigadier General Thomas Williams, were engaged by Major General John C. Breckinridge's Corp of Confederate Troops, who were attempting to regain control of the city.  The battle, also known as the Battle of Magnolia Cemetery because most of the fighting was concentrated in that area of the city, ended with the Union retaining control of the capital city, through the help of Union gunboats shelling the enemy from the Mississippi River, though General Williams was killed in the action.
